"Organizational Reform Must Be Done with a Bone-Cutting Resolve"
On the 5th, the People Power Party urged the entire Central Election Commission members to resign amid allegations of preferential hiring of children. This marks a step further from their previous demand for the resignation of Chairman No Tae-ak.
Yoon Jae-ok, the floor leader of the People Power Party, held an emergency party meeting at the National Assembly on the same day and stated, “Chairman No is deemed by the public as insufficient to restore the Election Commission, which has reached a critical point, and his prompt resignation would expedite the reform of the Commission.” He added, “All Election Commissioners who have failed to raise a voice of self-purification internally and who have blocked the reform of the Commission as if they were one body must resign.”

Yoon further criticized, “The various allegations revealed so far about the Election Commission are so serious that they cannot be seen as mere incidents occurring within a national institution managing major national elections.” He continued, “The basket voting incidents during the last presidential election were not simple mistakes but reflected the fundamental collapse and operational limits of the Election Commission, which we now understand.”
He also said, “The Election Commission’s refusal to undergo the Board of Audit and Inspection’s audit, while insisting only on the National Assembly’s parliamentary investigation dominated by the Democratic Party and the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission led by former Democratic Party member Jeon Hyun-hee, is an attempt to use the Democratic Party as a shield to conceal corruption and protect vested interests.” He added, “This proves that the Commission does not take the current issues seriously at all, shows no remorse, and that the internal members are ignoring the public outrage.”
Lee Cheol-gyu, the Secretary-General, also raised his voice, saying, “The Chairman and the Election Commission, who have made decisions disregarding the laws of the Republic of Korea and the people, no longer have the qualification to represent the people and be responsible for fair election management.” He emphasized, “They all must step down.”
Lee Man-hee, the ruling party’s ranking member of the National Assembly’s Public Administration and Security Committee, explained the allegations of preferential hiring of children and North Korean hacking suspicions to the lawmakers. Lee said, “This issue is not a matter of one or two individuals’ misconduct but a widespread pattern within the organization, which is why we initially insisted on an objective and professional audit by the Board of Audit and Inspection.” He added, “We must heed the stern voices of the public who say that they cannot entrust their precious votes to the Election Commission as it stands.”
Immediately after the party meeting, the People Power Party adopted a resolution urging Chairman No and all Election Commissioners to resign. Lawmakers held banners reading “Return the Election Commission to the people, immediately accept the Board of Audit and Inspection’s audit,” and placards with slogans such as “All Central Election Commissioners must resign,” “Dad’s chance, brother’s chance, the people are outraged,” and “Employment inheritance, youth deception, Election Commission, wake up.”
Along with this, the resolution emphasized, “The Election Commission, which has betrayed the people, must sincerely apologize to the public and reform the organization with a spirit of self-sacrifice.”
