Jeonnam Province Pledges to Spread Environmental Conservation Awareness and Promote Daily Environmental Protection Practices

On the 5th, Jeonnam Province held the '28th Environment Day' commemorative event at Yeosu Youth Marine Education Center to spread awareness of environmental conservation and pledge to practice environmental protection in daily life.

About 100 people attended the ceremony, including Moon Geum-ju, Vice Governor of Jeonnam Province, Hwang Seong-hwan, Vice Superintendent of Jeonnam Office of Education, Kim Tae-gyun, Vice Chairman of Jeonnam Provincial Council, Jeong Gi-myeong, Mayor of Yeosu, Kim Young-gyu, Chairman of Yeosu City Council, officials from Jeonnam and Yeosu Sustainable Development Councils, and students.


The pre-ceremony event began with a sand art performance delivering a message for Environment Day, followed by the presentation of awards to individuals who made significant contributions to environmental conservation.


At the awards ceremony, the Jeonnam Governor’s Commendation was presented and encouragement given to Jeong Nam-gi, Muan Committee member of Jeonnam Sustainable Development Council, Kim Soon-hee, Hampyeong Committee member, and Son Seong-min from Yeosu City Hall’s Parks Division. Additionally, 12 individuals who made notable contributions to environmental protection received awards such as the Jeonnam Office of Education Superintendent’s Commendation.


Other side events included various experiential programs such as writing commemorative phrases for Environment Day emphasizing environmental conservation practices, and making frames using glass shards found on the beach (Sea Glass Frame Making).


Jeonnam Province designated the week including Environment Day on the 5th as Environment Education Week and is operating the '2nd Environment Education Week' under the theme 'Good, Learn, Enjoy, and Share' until the 11th.


During Environment Education Week, the Jeonnam Environmental Education Center offers various online and offline programs for residents to participate in, such as 'Sseu-dam (Collecting Trash) Plogging (Walking)', 'Island Ecological Experience Play', and 'A Day to Save the Earth through Vegetarianism'.


In particular, from the 7th for two days, the 'Island Ecological Experience Play' operated by the Sinan Island Ecology Research Institute will provide diverse experiential environmental education programs including Yangbongsan ecological trekking, wooden puzzle assembly, fruit dart experience, and drawing Sinan native plants.


Vice Governor Moon Geum-ju said, “Achieving carbon neutrality is essential for sustainable development and must be accomplished by both current and future generations,” adding, “I hope this becomes an opportunity to take a step closer to realizing carbon neutrality by 2050 through fostering environmental conservation awareness and practicing environmental protection via environmental education.”
