Busan City announced the results of the ‘2021 Busan Marine Industry Survey,’ conducted from June to July last year to comprehensively and intensively understand the current status and trends of Busan's marine industry, aiming to secure competitiveness and utilize basic data for Busan's marine industry.
Starting with a pilot survey in 2010, the ‘Busan Marine Industry Survey’ marked its 12th edition in 2022 and is the only survey conducted by a local government in Busan. It is a very useful and important survey that enhances the status of Busan as a genuine marine capital, contributes to revitalizing the local economy, and strengthens the national competitiveness of the marine industry.
According to the survey results, as of 2021, the total number of businesses engaged in the marine industry within Busan was 29,787, the number of employees was 154,000, and sales amounted to 48.6 trillion KRW.
Compared to Busan’s entire industry, marine industry businesses accounted for 7.4% of the total number of businesses, 10.0% of employees, and 14.0% of sales. These figures represent increases of 6.5% in the number of businesses, 6.3% in employees, and 15.1% in sales compared to the previous year.
By marine industry classification, the ‘marine tourism sector’ had the highest proportion of businesses with 14,576 companies (48.9% of the total), while the ‘shipping and port logistics sector’ had the highest sales proportion with 19.7 trillion KRW (40.4% of the total sales).
Competitor countries in the marine industry were identified as China, Japan, and Russia. Among the competitive strengths of Busan’s marine industry, quality competitiveness and technological competitiveness were rated the highest. For the development of Busan’s marine industry, there was a desire for improved price competitiveness and various subsidy supports.
Mayor Park Hyung-jun stated, “I give great applause to the determination of small business owners who have actively strived to overcome the difficult times caused by COVID-19 and the deterioration of the fishery environment, and I thank all the businesses that participated in the Busan Marine Industry Survey. Based on the results of this survey, we will create Busan as an international central city connected with the world through proactive administrative activities for the development of the marine industry. We will also make sure to host the 2030 Busan World Expo to further enhance the status of Busan as a genuine marine city.”
