Hanwha Ocean Participates in MADEX 2023... Showcasing Expertise in Small and Medium-Sized Vessels Technology

Showcasing Latest Escort Ships and Korean-Style Destroyers Equipped with Cutting-Edge Technology

Hanwha Ocean (formerly Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering) will showcase its latest warship technology at the 13th International Maritime Defense Industry Exhibition (MADEX 2023), held at BEXCO in Busan from the 7th of this month.

Participating for the first time since the launch of Hanwha Ocean, the company will exhibit a total of four types of surface ships. These include the Ulsan-class Batch 3 (Batch-III) frigate, the Korean Destroyer eXperimental (KDDX), the Korean next-generation smart destroyer (KDDX-S), and the Joint Fire Support Ship, representing the company’s latest technologies. Additionally, two export-type submarines and an unmanned underwater vehicle will be showcased as part of a combined manned-unmanned maritime system.

Hanwha Ocean emphasizes that the Ulsan-class Batch 3 frigate is a 'successor superior to the lead ship.' It is equipped with a combat system developed by Hanwha Systems and applies a hybrid propulsion system to minimize underwater radiated noise. Hanwha Ocean developed and constructed the lead ship of the Ulsan-class frigate second phase project in 2018 and has since successfully built three additional ships after securing further orders.

Hanwha Ocean is the only domestic defense company that has undertaken all Aegis destroyer and Korean destroyer projects KDX-I, II, III, as well as the Jangbogo-class submarine projects I, II, and III. It was also the first in Korea to export combat ships and has exported the largest number of warships. Recently, the company has constructed not only combat ships but also various surface vessels such as logistics support ships and special purpose ships. In 2011, it exported submarines overseas, elevating South Korea to the status of the world’s fifth submarine-exporting country.

Hanwha Systems presents its capabilities in ‘maritime manned-unmanned combined systems’ and the vision of a ‘smart battleship’ through ▲ low Earth orbit communication satellites ▲ maritime unmanned systems ▲ ship combat systems ▲ anti-drone systems, unveiling a ‘maritime weapon system total solution’ based on hyper-connectivity, hyper-intelligence, and hyper-convergence.

Hanwha Ocean possesses undisputed top-tier shipbuilding technology in warship construction. By synergizing this with Hanwha Aerospace’s cutting-edge propulsion systems and Hanwha Systems’ latest combat systems, the company plans to supply the highest quality warships to the Republic of Korea Navy. Through this, Hanwha Group is expected to further solidify its position as a comprehensive solution provider spanning ‘from undersea to outer space.’
