Gangbuk-gu Supports Installation of RFID Food Waste Weighing Devices

Targeting apartment complexes with 50 or more households and general housing with 15 or more households... Installation of volume-based RFID devices and free distribution of individual disposal cards

RFID volume-based devices reduce food waste disposal amounts and help maintain a clean living environment

Interested parties can contact the Gangbuk-gu Cleaning Administration Division

Gangbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) announced that it will support the installation of 'food waste RFID volume-based devices' to reduce food waste and create a clean living environment.

The 'food waste RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) volume-based device' is a device that measures the amount of food waste disposed of using an electronic tag system and charges fees based on the disposal amount.

When a registered card is recognized by the volume-based device, the lid opens, and after disposing of the food waste, an electronic scale measures the weight, and the user pays a fee corresponding to the amount disposed.

Since this device charges fees based on the actual disposal amount, it effectively reduces food waste. Additionally, it allows disposal of food waste at any time without time restrictions, and the food waste bins can be hygienically managed, helping to maintain a clean living environment.

The fee is 130 KRW per kilogram, and users can choose to pay via a rechargeable prepaid card or a postpaid system.

Gangbuk-gu Supports Installation of RFID Food Waste Weighing Devices

Since introducing the RFID food waste volume-based system in 2018, the district has distributed and operated a total of 353 devices and plans to support an additional 50 devices this year.

Eligible applicants are apartment complexes with 50 or more households and general housing (multi-family and multi-unit houses) with 15 or more households; in the case of general housing, consent from two-thirds of the residents is required.

The district plans to select beneficiaries on a first-come, first-served basis, considering factors such as the number of households using the device, electricity supply, and installation space.

If selected, applicants will receive free installation of the volume-based device and individual disposal cards. Residents only need to pay a nominal device usage fee, which does not significantly differ from existing disposal costs.

For detailed information on applying for the RFID volume-based device and required documents, please check the Gangbuk-gu website or contact the district's Cleaning Administration Division.

Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, stated, “The RFID-based food waste volume-based system applies the polluter pays principle, which can reduce food waste. Based on this, it also reduces carbon dioxide emissions and contributes to carbon neutrality. We encourage many residents to apply for the sake of environmental preservation.”
