44.7% Highest for Defamation of Dignity
It has been revealed that more than 100 police officers were disciplined from January to April this year. Among them, 23 were disciplined for drunk driving, which falls under violations of regulations.
According to data submitted by the National Police Agency to Jeong Woo-taek, a member of the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee from the People Power Party, a total of 132 police officers were disciplined from January to April this year.
Damage to dignity due to criminal charges, etc., accounted for 59 people, making up 44.7% of the total, the highest number.
Violations of regulations such as disobedience to orders followed with 48 people (36.4%), dereliction of duty with 17 people (12.9%), and 8 people (6.1%) were disciplined for bribery.
Among them, 23 police officers were disciplined for drunk driving, which is considered a violation of regulations.
The number of drunk driving disciplinary cases was 64 in 2019, 74 in 2020, and 60 in 2022. However, with 23 cases already detected by April this year, there is a possibility that the number will increase compared to last year.
There were also three high-ranking police officers at the rank of chief superintendent or above who were disciplined. Among the lower ranks, there was 1 superintendent, 36 senior inspectors, 40 inspectors, 22 sergeants, 17 corporals, and 13 patrol officers. The total number of police disciplinary cases by year was 428 in 2019, 426 in 2020, 493 in 2021, and 471 in 2022.
Rep. Jeong said, "Police officers who are supposed to crack down on drunk driving have themselves been caught for drunk driving 23 times already this year, and including this, disciplinary cases such as bribery have exceeded 130." He added, "The Commissioner General of the National Police Agency must take special measures to reestablish the lax work discipline."
