According to the Aurora Police Department in Colorado on the 2nd (local time), the deceased child's maternal grandmother reported to 911 on the 30th of last month, saying, "Something seems to have happened to my 5-year-old granddaughter." The grandmother, who lives in Georgia, informed the police out of concern for the child's safety after her daughter expressed worrying stories about the granddaughter.

The police who received the report went to the apartment of the child's mother, Alexis Taniel Nelson (27), and inquired about the child's whereabouts. Nelson said, "I gave the child up for adoption elsewhere." Investigators checked state government records and confirmed that her statement was false.

Subsequently, with a warrant, the police searched Nelson's home and found the child's body in a closet. The investigation into the circumstances leading to the child's death is still ongoing. Nelson's motive for the crime has not yet been revealed. The police added charges of child abuse resulting in death, desecration of a corpse, and evidence tampering to the existing charges against Nelson. It is highly likely that murder charges will be added soon.

Police Chief Art Acevedo said at a briefing, "Unfortunately, the body was decomposed and could not be immediately identified, but we are confident that it is the missing child."
