A shooting broke out in the southern part of Chicago, USA, resulting in the death of a 14-year-old boy and leaving two others in critical condition.
According to local media on the 2nd (local time), around 8:30 p.m. the previous day, two groups composed of people in their teens to twenties engaged in a shooting in the Fuller Park district of South Chicago. The police stated, "Upon receiving the report and arriving at the scene, several people were found shot and lying on the ground," adding that one of the group members also aimed a gun at the police, prompting return fire.
The police reported that five people who were shot and lying at the scene were transported to the nearby University of Chicago Medical Center. Among them, the 14-year-old boy soon died. Two of the other injured are also reported to be in critical condition.
The authorities stated, "Three police officers were also injured during the response and received treatment, but none were shot."
In Chicago, gun-related incidents have been ongoing, with 53 people shot and 11 killed during the recent Memorial Day weekend. So far this year, 1,137 people have been shot and 230 have died, and including other means besides shootings, there have been 248 homicide cases.
Most of the shootings and homicides are concentrated in specific high-crime areas in the southern and western parts of the city.
