Blinken: "Ceasefire in Ukraine War Is Not Lasting Peace... Russia Strategically Defeated"

Tony Blinken, U.S. Secretary of State, currently on a tour of Northern Europe, expressed opposition to a ceasefire negotiation between Russia and Ukraine on the 2nd (local time).

According to AFP and others, Secretary Blinken gave a speech at Helsinki City Hall in Finland on the day, stating, "If the Ukrainian forces launch a counterattack, some countries will demand a ceasefire or peace agreement in the coming weeks or months."

He added, "A ceasefire may seem like a reasonable proposal, but it would allow Russian President Putin to rearm and attack again," pointing out that "it is not sustainable peace."

He emphasized that only a strong Ukraine can bring peace. Secretary Blinken raised his voice, saying, "I believe the prerequisite for meaningful diplomacy and genuine peace is a stronger Ukraine that can deter and defend against any future attacks." He also added that plans are in place to assist with power enhancement and training support.

Regarding President Putin, he sharply criticized, saying, "He tried to demonstrate power but revealed weaknesses," and stated that Putin has been "strategically defeated." Secretary Blinken emphasized, "Russia's power and interests have been severely damaged. The repercussions will continue for years to come."

He also revealed his views on ceasefire negotiations. He said, "The United States welcomes any plan that helps President Putin come to the negotiating table and engage in meaningful diplomacy," adding, "If Brazil, China, or any other country can coordinate the negotiations while adhering to the principles of the UN Charter and find a way to lead to peace," he said. This appears to be aimed at Brazil and China, who do not agree with condemning the Russian invasion and instead argue that Western weapons support for Ukraine worsens the situation.

Meanwhile, Secretary Blinken, who visited Sweden and Norway consecutively from the 29th of last month, concluded his Northern Europe tour with the visit to Finland on this day.
