The Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) has accepted the resignation of Executive Committee Chair Heo Mun-young and will transition to an acting leadership system.
On the 2nd, BIFF announced that it held its 4th board meeting, during which it decided to form an Innovation Committee and accepted Chair Heo's resignation.
Earlier, Chair Heo expressed his intention to step down and resigned after the establishment of a co-chair position and the appointment of Jo Jong-guk as the Operations Committee Chair at the extraordinary board meeting held on the 9th of last month.
The board stated, "Respecting his wishes, we accept Chair Heo's resignation." It added, "To ensure the successful hosting of this year's festival, preparations will proceed under an acting leadership system centered on Senior Programmer Nam Dong-chul."
Furthermore, the board recommended that Operations Committee Chair Jo Jong-guk clarify his position from a magnanimous perspective.
The board decided to form a preparatory committee to establish the Innovation Committee and plans to gather opinions from the film industry and civil society. The preparatory committee members include Kang Dong-su, Kim Jong-min, Kim Jin-hae, Nam Song-woo, Lee Cheong-san, Director Heo Eun, and Busan Metropolitan City’s Director of Culture and Sports, Kim Ki-hwan, totaling seven members.
However, BIFF did not comment on the recent allegations of sexual misconduct involving Executive Committee Chair Heo Mun-young.
This year’s Busan International Film Festival will be held from October 4 to 13 across the Busan area.
