Heavy Rain Damage Continues Due to Typhoon Mawar No. 2
Evacuation Orders for Residents and Shinkansen Service Suspended
Due to the impact of Typhoon Mawar, the second typhoon currently moving north after hitting the U.S. territory of Guam, heavy rain damage continued along the Pacific coast of Japan.
In some areas, evacuation orders were issued to residents, and the high-speed train Shinkansen also stopped operating.
According to NHK on the 2nd, as Typhoon Mawar passed south of Kyushu in the afternoon, warm and humid air flowed in, causing heavy rain in Aichi Prefecture, where Nagoya City is located, as well as in Shizuoka and Mie Prefectures.
In Gamagori City, Aichi Prefecture, a record-breaking 222.5 mm of rainfall was observed over 24 hours until 3 p.m. that day. In some areas of Aichi, Shizuoka, and Mie Prefectures, more than 50 mm of rain fell within one hour in the afternoon.
In Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture, concerns about river flooding in the city due to heavy rain led to the issuance of the highest alert level, Level 5 "Emergency Safety Assurance." A total of 411 households and 1,091 people in the city are subject to evacuation.
At around 5 p.m. that day, all sections of the Tokaido Shinkansen, the high-speed rail line connecting Tokyo and Osaka, suspended operations in both directions. As the typhoon approached Tokyo, up to 250 mm of heavy rain was expected over 24 hours until noon on the 3rd in the Kanto-Koshin, Tokai, and Shikoku regions including Tokyo, and up to 200 mm in the Kinki region where Osaka is located.
The Japan Meteorological Agency warned, "Heavy rain may continue over a wide area from western to northern Japan until the 3rd," and urged caution against landslides, river flooding, and inundation of low-lying areas.
