Hyundai Motor Company and Kia set a record for the highest monthly sales of eco-friendly vehicles in the U.S. market in May. Despite the reduction in subsidies due to the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), Hyundai and Kia's eco-friendly vehicles are recognized for their competitiveness in the U.S. market.
On the 2nd, Hyundai and Kia reported selling 26,187 eco-friendly vehicles in the U.S. market in May, a 69% increase compared to the previous year. Hyundai sold 13,945 units, and Kia sold 12,242 units. This marks the highest monthly sales of eco-friendly vehicles for both companies in the U.S. market.
By vehicle type, electric vehicle sales increased by 48% year-over-year to 8,105 units, while hybrid sales rose 80% to 18,066 units.
In particular, Hyundai's eco-friendly vehicle sales growth was notable. Hyundai's electric vehicle sales showed a clear increase due to new models such as the Ioniq 6, GV60, GV70, and G80 EV. The Ioniq 5 sold 2,446 units, a 27% increase from the previous year, and the Ioniq 6 sold 971 units, marking its highest sales since its U.S. market launch in March. The Kona Electric sold 936 units, a 257% increase compared to the previous year.
Kia sold 2,237 units of the EV6, a 7% increase year-over-year. The Sorento Hybrid model sold 2,545 units, setting a new monthly record.
