Seongnam City Enrolls Insurance Covering Up to 20 Million Won for Electric Mobility Device Accidents Involving Disabled Persons

Seongnam City Enrolls Insurance Covering Up to 20 Million Won for Electric Mobility Device Accidents Involving Disabled Persons Seongnam City recently signed a contract with Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance regarding the support for liability insurance for electric assistive devices for people with disabilities.

Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province has enrolled in an insurance policy that guarantees compensation of up to 20 million KRW for traffic accidents involving electric wheelchairs or electric scooters used by people with disabilities.

On the 2nd, Seongnam City announced that it recently signed a "Contract for Supporting Liability Insurance for Electric Assistive Devices for People with Disabilities" with Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance.

The insurance coverage period is one year, from the 1st of this month to May 31 of next year.

Registered persons with disabilities residing in Seongnam City (currently 36,136 people) are automatically enrolled without any separate procedures and receive insurance benefits as insured persons in case of an accident.

The insurance payout covers liability compensation when an accident causes injury or property damage to third parties such as pedestrians or vehicles while operating electric assistive devices.

The coverage amount is up to 20 million KRW per accident, with a deductible of 50,000 KRW. Insurance support can be claimed without any limit on the number of claims. However, compensation for damages to the insured person themselves is excluded.

Claims can be made through the insurance company's customer center, and the claim period is three years from the date of the accident.

A Seongnam City official explained, "Electric assistive devices mainly used by people with disabilities must use sidewalks rather than roadways according to current Road Traffic Act regulations, exposing them to risks of collisions with obstacles or pedestrians," adding, "We promoted liability insurance enrollment to reduce the economic burden on people with disabilities in case of accidents and to enhance their mobility convenience."
