Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology Awards Meritorious Persons on 'Sea Day'

Park Heung-sik, Director of Jeju Research Institute, Contributes to Carbon Sink Research and Development

Park Heung-sik, Director of the Jeju Research Center at the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), was awarded for his contributions to the development of marine and fisheries industries on the occasion of the 28th Sea Day.


The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST, President Kang Do-hyung) announced on the 1st that Park Heung-sik, Director of the Jeju Research Center, received a commendation for his contributions to the development of marine carbon sinks and the establishment of a global marine research hub project.

Additionally, Oh Myung-hak, Principal Researcher of the Marine ICT and Mobility Research Division, received the Prime Minister’s Commendation for his contributions to the development of ICT-based smart technologies for port facilities.


Park Hong-jin from the Management Planning Office, Park Jae-wook from the Research Management Office, and Cho Sung-ha from the Research Strategy Office received Ministerial Commendations for their contributions to the advancement of marine science and technology.


“Sea Day” is a national commemorative day designated in 1996 and observed annually on May 31 to raise public awareness of the economic and environmental value and importance of Korea’s seas.


The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (Minister Cho Seung-hwan) held the 28th “Sea Day” commemorative ceremony on May 31 at 10:10 a.m. at the Baekgyeol Performance Hall in Gyeongju Expo Park under the theme “Innovative Marine Industry, Leap Forward Marine Economy, Korea Moving Together,” awarding orders, medals, and commendations to 40 individuals who have contributed to the development of the marine and fisheries sectors.
