Gyeonggi Special Judicial Police Crack Down on Illegal Firefighting Construction Activities in Large Buildings

Gyeonggi Special Judicial Police Crack Down on Illegal Firefighting Construction Activities in Large Buildings The Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police for Public Welfare will conduct inspections of fire safety facilities within the province starting from the 8th.

Gyeonggi Province is launching an inspection of illegal activities related to fire safety facilities in large buildings within the province.

The Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police for Public Welfare announced on the 1st that from the 8th of this month until August 25th, they will conduct a focused crackdown on illegal activities throughout fire safety facility construction in newly built large buildings in the province.

The inspection targets large buildings with a total floor area of 5,000㎡ or more where 'smoke control systems' are installed. This includes 40 large buildings scheduled for completion in the province, such as large logistics centers, complex facilities, and apartment complexes.

Smoke control systems are critical facilities that use natural or mechanical methods to limit the movement and spread of smoke during a fire, facilitating the evacuation and escape of occupants.

They are generally required to be installed in buildings with a total floor area of 1,000㎡ or more used for sales, transportation, lodging facilities, or logistics terminals.

The Special Judicial Police for Public Welfare in the province reported that illegal subcontracting of fire safety construction and poor workmanship continue to occur at some construction sites. Therefore, they will focus on cracking down on ▲illegal subcontracting ▲poor construction ▲false supervision.

Engaging in illegal subcontracting, poor construction, or false supervision of fire safety facility construction is punishable under the current 'Fire Safety Facility Construction Act' by imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of up to 10 million KRW.

Hong Eun-gi, head of the Special Judicial Police for Public Welfare in Gyeonggi Province, emphasized, "Fire safety facilities, which are directly linked to the lives of residents, are especially important," adding, "We will pay continuous attention to ensure that fire safety facilities installed in the province are properly constructed and operate normally 24 hours a day."
