Sacheon City in Gyeongnam held an event for the ‘28th Sea Day’ to reflect on the meaning of the sea and to promote awareness of marine protection.
The event, held on May 31, was attended by about 100 people, including local fishing village associations and fisheries cooperatives in Sacheon, the Sacheon branch of the Gyeongsangnam-do Fisheries Safety Technology Institute, the Sacheon City Council, and public officials affiliated with Sacheon City.
They conducted a large-scale marine environment conservation campaign and coastal cleanup activities in the Jungchon Port area of Jahye-ri, Seopo-myeon, to spread awareness of marine protection among citizens.
Also, at 11 a.m., an event was held to release 10,000 rockfish juveniles around the artificial reef facility area of the San Bunryang fishing village association in Dongseo-dong, symbolizing the enhancement of fishery resources.
This event was organized to celebrate the ‘28th Sea Day (May 31)’ and to foster an atmosphere of cultivating a clean and blue sea and to raise awareness of marine ecosystem conservation.
Sea Day is a national commemorative day established to promote the public’s maritime spirit and to boost the pride of those engaged in marine-related industries, observed annually on May 31.
The city expects to achieve a triple effect of improving the marine environment, establishing a foundation for fishery resources, and forming a broad civic consensus on love for the sea.
Mayor Park Dongsik said, “The decrease in fishery resources has not only shrunk the core industry of fisheries but also seriously affected changes in the marine ecosystem,” and urged, “We ask citizens to actively participate in protecting and nurturing the sea themselves.”
