Disposable cup use will be discontinued at cafes located within government office buildings from now on.
On the 31st, the Ministry of Environment announced that, together with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the Government Complex Management Headquarters, and the Korea Post, it will hold the "Government Office Coffee Shop Disposable Cup Reduction Vision Proclamation Ceremony" on the 1st of next month.
The Ministry of Environment and the Government Complex Management Headquarters announced that coffee shops located in 13 government office buildings nationwide will be required to introduce a reusable cup circulation system by 2027.
First, 20 coffee shops within the Government Complex Sejong will introduce the reusable cup circulation system starting from the 1st of next month, converting into stores exclusively using reusable cups. There are a total of 22 coffee shops within the Sejong Complex.
The Ministry of Environment expects that as the coffee shops in the Sejong Complex switch to reusable cup-exclusive stores, the use of disposable cups will be reduced by 1.8 million annually.
Since December last year, the government has been encouraging restraint in bringing disposable cups into office buildings in accordance with the "Public Institution Disposable Goods Usage Reduction Practice Guidelines."
