‘Busan Global Coffee Forum’ Held … Establishing an International Academic Foundation for the Coffee Industry and Defining the Status of the Coffee City

First International Academic Conference on 'Specialty Coffee' with Over 170 Coffee Experts from Various Countries Attending

Busan City and the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) will hold the "2023 Busan Global Coffee Forum" (hereinafter referred to as the Forum) on May 31 and June 1 at the Asti Hotel to establish an international academic foundation for the coffee industry and to solidify Busan's status as a coffee city.

The Specialty Coffee Association is a nonprofit organization based in Irvine, California, USA, representing the specialty coffee industry. It promotes projects such as the World Coffee Championship, certification issuance, research, and forums.


This Forum is organized as an international coffee specialized education version of the SCA's annual coffee academic festival, the Specialty Coffee Association Sensory Summit, and is being held in Busan for the first time.


With over 170 coffee experts from 10 countries attending, the Forum will feature programs including a welcome event, coffee value evaluation (theory, description, emotion, sensory), and updates on research into the sweetness of coffee.


Lectures for each program will be delivered by world-renowned coffee experts, including Peter Giuliano, Director of the Specialty Coffee Association Research Institute and CEO of the Coffee Science Foundation.


In particular, the welcome event held today at 5:30 PM will be attended by Lee Seong-gwon, Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs, who will greet the SCA executives and participants visiting Busan.


Busan City is promoting various projects such as the "Basic Plan Establishment Service for Coffee Industry Promotion" to establish a vision and development strategy for fostering the coffee industry, "Hosting Local Coffee Festivals" to nurture representative coffee festivals in Busan, "Coffee Industry Infrastructure and Enterprise Support Projects" to support marketing and technology development of coffee-related companies, and hosting events like "World of Coffee Asia" and the "World Barista Championship (WBC)."


Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs Lee Seong-gwon stated, "As the coffee industry rapidly grows worldwide and coffee culture becomes more popular, the demand for coffee is increasing. In this atmosphere, Busan, with its historical background as a coffee city and excellent location and human resources, will strive to play a meaningful role."
