Healing Space 'Story Pot' ... Gumi City Renovates This Year's Book Collection and Book Curation

Reorganized Books Perfect for Reading on a Walk

Gumi City Central Library in Gyeongbuk has completely reorganized the book collection of the outdoor reading space ‘Story Pot,’ whose usage has significantly declined due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, to revitalize its use.

This reorganization of the book collection aims to replace books that have been discolored and aged from prolonged exposure to sunlight and those that have lost their value due to being published a long time ago with new and recommended books, and to provide curated books tailored to visitors of the Story Pot.

Considering the characteristics of the ‘Story Pot’ located along the park’s walking trail, the curation was done mainly with books that are easy to read briefly while sitting outdoors, under the concept of ‘relaxation found in a resting space within the park.’

The Geumosan ‘Story Pot’ is composed of three themed book categories: ‘Starting Picture Books’ recommended by local authors Lee Sookhyun and Lee Jinwoo, ‘Healing Picture Books’ for adults, and ‘Heart Pause Books’ for brief moments of rest. The Dongnak Park ‘Story Pot’ includes an additional theme, ‘Science Picture Books to Read in Front of the Science Museum,’ making a total of four themed book categories available.

In particular, the Geumosan ‘Story Pot’ has created a ‘Shared Book Box’ to share and return existing books to citizens, and has also set up a book exchange market where books sleeping at home can be exchanged one-to-one with books removed from the Story Pot’s display. This is operated autonomously by citizens.

The newly reorganized Geumosan ‘Story Pot’ is available from Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Dongnak Park ‘Story Pot’ is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Lee Seonim, director of Gumi City Central Library, said, “As the first attempt to change the book collection since the opening of the Story Pot, I hope many citizens will use the newly organized books,” and added, “I hope it will be a good opportunity for citizens to enjoy both rest and reading at the Story Pot and to heal.”

The ‘Story Pot’ is a small outdoor library installed in about 7㎡ (1.8 pyeong) of space, where visitors can enjoy the surrounding scenery while reading books. It was established in 2017 through an agreement between Gumi City and the Town of Newmarket in Canada and is located at Geumosan and Dongnak Park.
