'Wonju District in Seoul?' Only 40 Minutes to Seoul... Highly Accessible 'Wonju Xi Centro'

‘Wonju,’ the largest city in Gangwon Province, is making a leap forward with excellent accessibility to Seoul and various transportation advantages. As its position as a transportation hub adjacent to the Seoul metropolitan area in the central part of the Korean Peninsula becomes more prominent, it is interpreted that Wonju’s status as the only city nationwide to simultaneously host both a corporate city and an innovation city, as well as a representative industrial city of Gangwon, is greatly rising.

Wonju, Gangwon, which borders Yeoju City in Gyeonggi Province, is considered a representative transportation hub located in the central part of the Korean Peninsula. It has a well-connected transportation network facilitating convenient metropolitan and nationwide travel, including the Yeongdong and Gwangju-Wonju Expressways connecting Wonju and the metropolitan area, the Jungang Expressway linking to the Yeongnam region, three national highways, and twelve provincial roads.

In particular, the opening of the ‘KTX-Eum’ has dramatically improved Wonju’s accessibility to Seoul. Since the KTX-Eum trains started running through Wonju Station, which relocated to Musil-dong in 2021, it takes only 46 minutes to reach Wonju from Seoul Cheongnyangni Station. This travel time is comparable to the time it takes to get from Seoul Cheongnyangni to Gasan Digital Complex Station, which is why Wonju is sometimes nicknamed ‘Wonju-gu of Seoul.’

An official from real estate agency A near Wonju Station said, “The public parking lot at Wonju Station is spacious, and the public transportation connections between Wonju Station and downtown Wonju are excellent, so more people than expected commute using the KTX-Eum,” adding, “Since the opening of the KTX-Eum, accessibility to Seoul and the metropolitan area has improved, leading to active investments from outsiders.”

Moreover, additional transportation benefits are continuously emerging in Wonju. The double-track railway between Yeoju and Wonju, scheduled for completion in 2027, is a prime example. Once this line opens, it will be possible to travel directly from Wonju Station to southern Gyeonggi’s Pangyo and even Seoul’s Gangnam Suseo in about 40 minutes. Furthermore, according to Wonju City and others, the construction start date for this line is expected to be moved up by about six months, with early groundbreaking anticipated this September, raising expectations both inside and outside the region.

As Wonju gains attention for its Seoul accessibility, the city’s regional value continues to rise. Since the start of construction on the Wonju-Jecheon double-track railway line, which the KTX-Eum passes through, in 2011 (population 320,536), Wonju’s population has steadily increased every year up to April this year (360,974). The number of businesses and employees also grew significantly, from 25,067 businesses and 108,776 employees in 2012 to 42,783 businesses and 167,279 employees in 2021.

An industry insider explained, “Fundamentally, Wonju, with its excellent metropolitan area accessibility, is a representative city where living zones have expanded, population inflow has increased, and companies have been attracted through transportation benefits such as railway openings,” adding, “It is also noteworthy that Wonju’s 8th-term local government, which pledged to attract a Samsung semiconductor factory, is accelerating efforts to establish a semiconductor industry ecosystem.”

Consequently, new housing complexes in Wonju naturally attract attention. GS Construction plans to launch sales of ‘Wonju Xi Centro’ in June within Block 1 of the Dangu District Urban Development Project Area in Wonju, Gangwon Province. This will be the first Xi brand complex in Wonju, consisting of eight buildings ranging from three basement floors to a maximum of 29 floors above ground, with a total of 970 units sized between 84 and 130 square meters.

Wonju Xi Centro is conveniently located near the Namwonju IC on the Jungang Expressway, making travel to nearby areas easy. It is adjacent to Sicheong-ro, facilitating access not only to Wonju Station but also to downtown areas such as Musil-dong, Myeongnyun-dong, and Wonju Innovation City. Additionally, residents can easily use various convenience, cultural, and administrative facilities in the Dangu-dong and Musil-dong areas, including Homeplus (Wonju branch), E-Mart (Wonju branch), Lotte Cinema, Wonju Premium Outlet, Wonju National Sports Center, Chiak Arts Center, Wonju General Gymnasium, Chuncheon District Court Wonju Branch, and Wonju General Bus Terminal.

Furthermore, the educational environment is excellent with elementary, middle, and high schools within walking distance, as well as academies in Dangu-dong and Musil-dong. The complex is surrounded by abundant green infrastructure, including the foothills of Baegunsan Mountain, Chiaksan National Park, Dangun Park, and Dangu Neighborhood Park, providing a pleasant residential environment.

Since it is located in a non-regulated private land area, resale is possible after contract signing. Additionally, multi-homeowners and household members can apply for subscription, and there are no restrictions on re-winning.

Wonju Xi Centro is currently operating a promotional center in Musil-dong, Wonju City, Gangwon Province, and the model house is scheduled to open in June in the same area.
