Create New Services and Added Value with Cultural Data

Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Cultural Data Utilization Contest

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Culture Information Service Agency are accepting entries for the Cultural Data Utilization Contest until July 13.

Create New Services and Added Value with Cultural Data

Cultural data refers to data related to culture, including performances, exhibitions, festivals, movies, books, games, broadcasting, sports, cultural heritage, tourism, and Hallyu, which are provided on websites of cultural institutions such as the Cultural Public Data Plaza, Cultural Big Data Platform, and Culture Portal. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism holds this contest annually to discover ideas utilizing this data and support their commercialization. Last year, the grand prize winner in the idea category, "Hangul-Sign Language Translation Platform Service SLP (Sign Language Platform)," received the top award (Prime Minister’s Award) at the Government-wide Public Data Utilization Startup Contest hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

Anyone interested in cultural data can participate. The contest categories are ▲Product/Service ▲Idea ▲Data Analysis. Applicants can fill out and submit the application form and other documents on the contest website. After document screening and presentation evaluation, the Ministry will announce fourteen winning entries in early August and award prize money totaling 41.5 million KRW along with commendations including the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award. The award ceremony will be held on November 15.

Shin Eunhyang, Policy Planning Officer at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said, "The grand prize winners in each category will automatically advance to the finals of the Government-wide Public Data Utilization Startup Contest," and added, "We hope that many excellent works showcasing cultural appeal will be submitted this year as well, creating new services and added value."
