‘Real-Time Driving Information Displayed on Road’ Hyundai Mobis Develops New Technology

Next-Generation Headlamps... Using Cameras and Navigation
Providing Drivers with Necessary Information
Showing Crosswalks to Pedestrians

Hyundai Mobis announced on the 25th that it has successfully developed a next-generation headlamp that displays driving information in real-time on the road surface ahead. This technology is expected to significantly reduce nighttime safety accidents.

The HD lighting system developed by the company visualizes driving information as letters or shapes and projects them onto the road surface. It can also link with information obtained from front sensors (cameras) and navigation systems to provide drivers with necessary information in real-time. For example, it can notify the driver with a symbol that there is 'construction ahead.'

It can also prevent pedestrian safety accidents. When the camera sensor recognizes a pedestrian in an alley and the vehicle stops, a virtual crosswalk is projected onto the road. This realizes the so-called 'communication lighting' technology that communicates through the headlamp.

This system consists of an HD micro LED as the light source and a Digital Micro Mirror Device (DMD), an ultra-small mirror that acts as a reflector. The micro LED is 0.04 mm in size, thinner than a strand of hair, and about 25,000 units are installed. Typically, LED headlamps contain only 80 to 120 units. According to the company, this allows for precise light control and more accurate recognition of objects and pedestrian locations.

The DMD is an ultra-small mirror measuring 0.01 mm that controls light refraction. The digital mirrors, totaling 1.3 million, refract the light from the LEDs to project desired shapes or symbols onto the road.

A Hyundai Mobis official stated, “In the future autonomous driving era, the importance of software technology that can integrate various components necessary for driving into a single device will increase. Hyundai Mobis is leading the way in developing cutting-edge lamps and securing the technology to control them.”
