Jungnang-gu (District Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi) has taken action to protect residents from the early heatwave.

The district has designated the period from the 20th of this month to September 30 as the heatwave response period and has begun implementing comprehensive heatwave measures.

First, throughout this period, a heatwave response TF team composed of the Situation Control Team, Health Management Support Team, and Welfare Measures Team will be activated. The TF team continuously monitors the heatwave situation and the occurrence of heat-related illnesses to assess damage caused by the heatwave.

When a heatwave advisory is issued, the TF team will expand into a comprehensive heatwave support situation room to carry out response activities aimed at preventing heatwave damage in various sectors. In the event of large-scale damage caused by the heatwave, a Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters led by the district mayor will be operated.

Heatwave mitigation facilities include shade shelters and mist-type cooling water (cooling fog). Since April, the district has been operating a total of 117 shade shelters at crosswalks to help avoid the scorching sun. Starting this month, mist-type cooling water systems that lower surrounding temperatures and reduce fine dust will also be operated at Junghwasugyeong Park and Yongma Waterfall Park. Additionally, road water cleaning will be expanded.

Resident-friendly, practical measures have also been prepared. Outdoor heatwave relief shelters are being established along major walking trails and parks, and Jungnang Ongdalsaem is being installed.

Jungnang Ongdalsaem, first operated in 2021, is a bottled water refrigerator where anyone can freely drink cool water and cool down, receiving high praise from district residents. This year, it will be operated at a total of 12 locations during July and August.

Customized policies for heatwave-vulnerable groups have been carefully prepared as well. A total of 123 heatwave relief centers have been set up at community centers, senior centers, and welfare centers to provide resting spaces for vulnerable seniors and others. Elderly living alone, homeless people, and those with chronic illnesses are classified as high-risk groups for heatwaves, and their condition will be continuously monitored to enable rapid rescue in case of emergencies.

Special measures for outdoor workers are also being promoted. Rest areas will be secured at construction sites during summer, and work hours will be adjusted during heatwave advisories to protect workers. Inspections of construction sites and promotional activities will be strengthened.

Ryu Gyeong-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, “We will respond thoroughly to the early heat and upcoming heatwaves to protect residents safely without any gaps,” and added, “We ask residents to refrain from outdoor activities during heatwaves, stay well hydrated, and familiarize themselves with heatwave action guidelines to prevent any damage.”
