'Rollable Flex' That Extends to 5 Times Its Vertical Length When Unrolled
'Flex In and Out' That Folds Both Inward and Outward
Samsung Display is visiting the Society for Information Display (SID) 'Display Week 2023' with next-generation innovative technologies that will change the paradigm of the OLED industry.
Samsung Display announced on the 23rd that it will participate in 'Display Week 2023,' held from the 23rd to the 25th (local time) in Los Angeles, USA, and exhibit various next-generation products. This year, it will unveil for the first time the 'Rollable Flex,' which will revolutionize the portability of tablet PCs and laptops, and the 'Sensor OLED Display,' which integrates fingerprint and blood pressure sensors into the panel without attaching separate modules, presenting new usability of displays.

The most eye-catching product at this exhibition is the 'Rollable Flex.' The newly unveiled Rollable Flex expands more than five times from 49mm to 254.4mm based on the vertical length of the screen. While existing foldable and slidable form factors have a maximum expansion of 2 to 3 times, the rollable overcomes this limitation by implementing the display to roll and unroll around an O-shaped axis like a roll of toilet paper.
A Samsung Display official explained, "The biggest feature is that it improves portability by implementing a large-sized display, which is difficult to carry, as a rollable."
Samsung Display also introduced the 'Flex In&Out,' a new foldable phone concept that can fold both inward and outward and operate 360 degrees. The 'infolding' form factor, which folds only inward, requires a separate external panel to check information when folded, but the Flex In&Out overcomes this, suggesting the possibility of a lighter and thinner foldable phone.

In addition, Samsung Display showcased new form factor products such as the 'Flex Hybrid,' which combines both foldable and slidable technologies, and the 'Slidable Flex Solo,' which can expand a 13-inch tablet to a large 17-inch screen.
Samsung Display also unveiled its unique new technology, the 'Sensor OLED Display,' which recognizes fingerprints across the entire screen and can even check cardiovascular health status. Typically, fingerprint sensors on smartphones are separate modules attached under the OLED panel, but Samsung Display internalized the sensor by simultaneously depositing an organic photodiode (OPD), an optical sensor, when depositing the OLED elements. Furthermore, the OPD-embedded panel can measure the user's heart rate, blood pressure, and stress levels with just a finger touch. Samsung Display is the first to reveal panel technology that can sense fingerprints and biometric information simultaneously.
The QD-OLED, which first appeared at 'CES 2022' and amazed the world with unprecedented color and image quality, will be further upgraded and showcased at SID. Unlike existing large OLEDs that realize colors through color filters, QD-OLED utilizes the optical properties of quantum dots that emit different colors depending on particle size, expressing the colors intended by content creators most accurately among current displays. At this exhibition, a newly added extra-large 77-inch panel for TV lineups will offer customers an experience as if they were in a movie theater.
