Woo Sang-hyeok (27, Yongin City Hall), who is writing a new legend in South Korean athletics, expressed his gratitude to Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin and the citizens of Yongin after winning the high jump at the international athletics competition held in Yokohama, Japan.

The day after his victory, on the 22nd, Woo Sang-hyeok called Mayor Lee Sang-il and shared his thoughts, saying that the meticulous support from Yongin City and the enthusiastic cheers from the citizens were a great source of strength in achieving the goal of winning the international competition.

Mayor Lee Sang-il responded, "It is very proud that Woo Sang-hyeok won the international competition while going through a tough schedule, including events in Doha, Qatar, Yecheon, Gyeongbuk, and Yokohama, Japan, over two weeks," adding, "Woo Sang-hyeok's victory is more than an individual achievement; it has given great hope to South Korea and the citizens of Yongin."

The mayor especially emphasized, "More important than good results is always maintaining a bright attitude and staying in good condition without injury," promising, "Yongin City will continue to provide meticulous support and encouragement."

On the 21st, Woo Sang-hyeok cleared 2.29 meters at the '2023 Seiko Golden Grand Prix' held in Yokohama, Japan, surpassing Australia's Joel Baden to claim his first world competition gold medal of the year.

The Seiko Golden Grand Prix is part of the 'Continental Tour,' an international athletics competition recognized by World Athletics, and Woo Sang-hyeok is the first South Korean athlete to win at a Golden Grand Prix event.

Woo Sang-hyeok will move from Japan to Italy on the 30th to participate in the World Athletics Diamond League held in Rome, Italy, on the 2nd of next month.

He will also compete in the World Championships held in Budapest, Hungary, in August and the Hangzhou Asian Games in September.
