Excessive Drinking Can Cause Acute Alcohol Poisoning
Equivalent to an Adult's Daily Alcohol Metabolism of 1.5 Bottles of Soju
An internet broadcaster in China who was live streaming has shocked many after a man was found dead following the consecutive consumption of four bottles of alcohol.
On the 20th, Chinese media outlets such as Sina and hk01 reported that internet broadcaster Sanchenhyung (34) had passed away and his funeral procedures were completed.

According to hk01, Sanchenhyung, whose main content was drinking alcohol during live broadcasts, drank four bottles of Baijiu consecutively on the 15th while doing his usual 'drinking mukbang'. However, after drinking the third bottle, he felt unwell and said, "I entrust my fate," before downing the last bottle. The next day, a friend discovered that he had died.
Since he frequently did 'drinking mukbangs' where he would one-shot Baijiu, both his viewers and Sanchenhyung himself overlooked the dangers of excessive drinking. In particular, his longtime fans openly commented that Sanchenhyung was the person who drank the best.
Zhao, a restaurant owner and friend of Sanchenhyung, mourned his death in an interview, saying, "He was a good friend," and "I never thought he would die so tragically." He also mentioned that he saw him off on his final journey on the 19th.
Chinese netizens who learned of this reacted with comments such as, "Why would someone do something so dangerous?" and "It's shocking to die while doing a drinking mukbang." Some netizens also commented, "Even for adult men with high alcohol metabolism, this incident reminded us that drinking a large amount of hard liquor in a short time threatens life."
Amount of alcohol a 60kg adult can metabolize in one day: 1.5 bottles of Soju
Acute alcohol poisoning occurs when a person drinks more alcohol than their usual tolerance in a short period, leading to walking difficulties, vomiting, erratic behavior, and eventually loss of consciousness. A person showing symptoms of acute alcohol poisoning will not respond even if shaken or hit by someone nearby. Depending on the individual, when the blood alcohol concentration reaches 0.5% or higher, breathing becomes difficult, and irregular heartbeats may occur, which can lead to death. [Photo by Pixabay]
Meanwhile, as some internet broadcasters in Korea also conduct drinking mukbangs, awareness of acute alcohol poisoning is necessary. Generally, an adult weighing 60kg can metabolize about 80g of alcohol per day on average. This corresponds to about 1.5 bottles of Soju.
The Baijiu Sanchenhyung drank is a strong liquor with an alcohol content ranging from 32 to 40 degrees. Drinking excessively beyond one's tolerance, whether Baijiu, Soju, beer, or other alcohol, can cause acute alcohol poisoning.
Acute alcohol poisoning occurs when a person drinks more alcohol than their tolerance in a short period, leading to walking difficulties, vomiting, erratic behavior, and eventually loss of consciousness. People showing symptoms of acute alcohol poisoning do not respond even if hit or awakened by others. Depending on the individual, if the blood alcohol concentration exceeds 0.5%, breathing difficulties and irregular heartbeat may occur, which can be fatal.
Since about 50% of alcohol is absorbed in the stomach, drinking on an empty stomach causes faster intoxication. Therefore, it is advisable to consume side dishes, water, and electrolyte drinks appropriately during drinking sessions. Also, mixing stimulants like energy drinks with alcohol or mixing various types of alcohol should be avoided as it accelerates absorption and can cause dizziness.
Currently, there are no medications or blood tests available to measure one's alcohol tolerance in advance. Therefore, if a person cannot follow specific instructions such as "close your eyes and touch your nose with your index finger" or cannot walk straight along a line on the floor, they should stop drinking immediately.
