Mokpo Jangmi Street Emerges as a Hot Place... 50,000 Roses in Full Bloom

'Rose Mokpo' Photo Zone Features Abundant Floor Fountains for Sightseeing and Play

Mokpo City in Jeollanam-do has completed the renovation and reopened the ‘Hadang Rose Street,’ the core section of the Hadang Cross-shaped Urban Forest, which was created to lay the foundation for low-carbon green growth within the city.

According to the city on the 22nd, the ‘Hadang Cross-shaped Urban Forest Creation’ project won the grand prize at the 2009 Korea Public Design Expo hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and also received an excellence award in the nationwide green city evaluation by the Korea Forest Service for local governments.

Additionally, it has been recognized as an advanced case by winning the Excellence Award at the 2011 Korea Landscape Awards.

Rose Street, the core section of the cross-shaped urban forest, was established as a nature-friendly street in 2009, and 14 years have passed since then.

At the time of its creation, it was a representative central commercial area in Hadang frequently visited by families, couples, and shoppers, contributing to revitalizing the local economy by enhancing the competitiveness of surrounding stores.

However, with the development of new towns, the floating population sharply decreased, and the commercial district gradually declined, making remodeling urgently necessary to live up to the reputation of ‘Rose Street.’

In response, Mokpo City, in line with the 8th municipal administration’s catchphrase ‘A Greater Mokpo Where Youth Gather,’ added 4,000 plants of five rose species to the existing rose garden, completing a garden with 50,000 blooming roses.

Especially in May, the queen of seasons, when 50,000 roses bloom in full, Rose Street is emerging as a new hot place.

The city is not only planting roses but also installing two sculptures symbolizing the rose flower path to make it a street that attracts young people.

Starting next month, after water quality tests and mechanical equipment inspections for the operation of the ground fountain, plans are underway to allow children to enjoy water play safely and joyfully.

The city expects that visitors will take photos at the photo zone named ‘Rose Mokpo,’ enjoy drinks outdoors, and stroll, bringing vitality to daily life and bringing smiles to the faces of store owners.

A city official said, “We will devote efforts to urban landscape management and continuous remodeling so that the commercial district can revive, worthy of the name Rose Street.”
