The cherries from the Dunsan-dong area in Dong-gu, Daegu, are grown in relatively high-altitude orchards, providing good drainage and ventilation, and a large average daily temperature difference, which is evaluated to result in rich sweetness. This year, the blooming period was early, and both early varieties such as Ilchul, Early Blot, Jwadeunggeum, and mid-season varieties are being shipped.

The Dong-gu Office of Daegu has been registering a geographical indication collective mark for cherries since 2012 to preserve the historical value of the cherries and has been steadily fostering them as a source of income for farmers.

Cherries contain anthocyanins and calcium, which help maintain eye health, prevent osteoporosis and arthritis, and are known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, earning them the reputation of a medicinal fruit.

Yoon Seok-jun, head of Dong-gu Office, said, “We ask that many people seek out the domestic Sangdong cherries, which can only be enjoyed at this time of year, to greatly support the farmers and the local economy.”
