G7 "Need for AI Regulation... Discussing Hiroshima Process, Reporting Results This Year"

The leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) agreed on the 19th at the summit held in Hiroshima, Japan, that AI must be properly controlled.

The Japanese government stated in the outcome document of Session 1 (Global Economy) of the G7 summit held that day, "The G7 leaders confirmed the need for control over generative AI and immersive technologies in the digital sector." In particular, regarding generative AI, it was agreed that responsible ministers would promptly discuss the matter under the framework of the "Hiroshima AI Process" and report the results within this year.

Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister of Japan, the G7 chair country this year, announced in an interview with Japanese media on the 15th that the Hiroshima AI Process would be launched through consensus among leaders to establish international norms and frameworks for the international distribution of information related to generative AI, represented by ChatGPT.

The Japanese government said that Prime Minister Kishida stated at the meeting the need to concretize "trusted free flow of information (DFFT)" in order to build "human-centered trustworthy AI."

Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, which creates text and images, is rapidly spreading in use, but concerns have been raised about the need for regulation due to issues such as personal information leaks and copyright infringement.
