US-Japan Summit Meeting One Day Before the Opening of the G7 Summit

A US-Japan summit was held in Hiroshima, Japan, on the 18th, one day before the opening of the Group of Seven (G7) summit.


According to the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the meeting, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida mentioned his visit to South Korea on the 7th and 8th of this month and said he would further advance Japan-South Korea relations. In response, US President Joe Biden welcomed the improvement of Japan-South Korea relations.

The US and Japanese leaders agreed to continue close cooperation between the US and Japan, as well as among the US, Japan, and South Korea, in strengthening regional deterrence and Security Council responses, including trilateral security cooperation for the complete denuclearization of North Korea in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions.


The White House also stated that the two leaders, who held a bilateral meeting ahead of the G7 summit, agreed to closely cooperate in responding to the security challenges posed by North Korea.


President Yoon Suk-yeol will also depart on the 19th to attend the G7 summit. The G7 summit will be held in Hiroshima from the 19th to the 21st.
