Lee Joo-hyung, Vice President and Head of Development at Samsung Display's Small and Medium Display Division, has been selected as the recipient of the Special Recognition Award from the Society for Information Display (SID).
Samsung Display announced on the 18th that Vice President Lee was chosen as the recipient of SID's "2023 Special Recognition Award." The Special Recognition Award, established in 1972, is an honor given by SID to experts who have contributed to the advancement of display technology and the industry. Unlike other individual awards given by SID, this award can be received even by non-members. This year, a total of six individuals, including Vice President Lee, were selected as recipients of the Special Recognition Award.

SID explained the reason for selecting Vice President Lee as an awardee, stating that he contributed to the development of OLED with embedded touch technology and OLED products with low-power backplane technology. The embedded touch technology, known as OCTA (On Cell Touch AMOLED), forms touch sensors inside the panel instead of attaching a film that recognizes touch on the panel surface. This technology is eco-friendly as it does not use plastic film materials and reduces the panel's thickness and weight. Samsung Display recently applied OCTA technology not only to smartphone OLEDs but also to notebook OLEDs.
Vice President Lee holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He joined Samsung in 1993, was promoted to an executive in charge of OLED development in 2012, served as the head of the product development team in the Small and Medium Display Division, and has been the head of development since December 2022. In 2018, he received the Prime Minister's Commendation in recognition of his achievement in developing the world's first notch-type flexible OLED.
The "2023 Special Recognition Award" ceremony is scheduled to take place during "SID Display Week 2023," held from the 21st to the 26th in Los Angeles, California, USA.
