Joo Kyu-il, Mayor of Jinju, Invited Speaker at 'Namgang Forum Seminar' in the National Assembly Joo Kyu-il, Mayor of Jinju City, Gyeongnam, is giving a lecture after being invited to the Namgang Forum seminar held at the National Assembly Members' Office Building.

First, he explained the ideology of Gyeongui, the root of the Jinju spirit, evoking pride as a water city and a city of culture and arts, and showed photos of Jinju’s past filled with memories and its dazzlingly transformed present.

He continued, “Although Jinju experienced a period of stagnation due to the relocation of the Gyeongnam Provincial Government Office and Daedong Industrial Company, which took away 100 years, recently, hope has begun to open up one by one with the opening of the Western Government Complex, Innovation City, National Aviation Industrial Complex, and Southern Inland Railroad,” he explained.

He added, “However, these opportunities are facing unexpected challenges, and crisis and opportunity coexist,” emphasizing, “We must seize the opportunity that came after the lost 100 years.”

Mayor Cho said, “Last year, we achieved many accomplishments, including winning three crowns at the national character contest and ranking first in the 2022 Korea City Awards. Economically, we gained wings in the aerospace industry by attracting the KAI Rotary Wing Flight Center in 2021 and designating the Space Industry Cluster Satellite Specialized Zone in 2022. Culturally, we are regaining our former glory as a city of culture and arts, having been designated a UNESCO Creative City in 2019 and selected as a World Festival City in 2022. In particular, from the 3rd to the 13th of this month, we successfully hosted the 2023 Jinju Asian Weightlifting Championships, Jinju’s first international sports event, to worldwide acclaim alongside our citizens,” he said.

He also introduced the symbolic Jisumyeon area, which produced about 30 of Korea’s top 100 entrepreneurs in the 1980s, and the Seungsan Village themed tourist site, a wealthy village, noting that “Entrepreneurship emphasizing business patriotism and national prosperity differs from Western capitalism based on modern capitalism.” He expressed his ambition, saying, “We will establish a foundation composed of entrepreneurs, scholars, and experts, and hold an international forum in July, aiming to leap forward as the ‘K-Entrepreneurship Capital’ in the world.”

Mayor Cho concluded his lecture by revealing plans for the future 100 years of Jinju, including the AAM (Advanced Air Mobility) industry, the first ultra-small satellite launch by a local government, the three major projects for a prosperous Jinju, and Jinju in the forest of Wolasan Mountain, all part of the “Prosperous Jinju Season 2” plan to make all citizens happy.

The Namgang Forum is a gathering of Jinju natives who are leaders in various fields of society, affiliated with alumni associations from Daego High School, Jinju High School, Dongmyeong High School, Myeongsin High School, Jinju Mechanical Technical High School, Jinju Girls’ High School, and Samhyeon Girls’ High School in the metropolitan area.
