The streets of Myeongdong are coming alive. Since the beginning of this year, foreign tourists have started returning to Myeongdong, and with the 'endemic declaration,' the area is expected to become even more crowded and bustling.
Jung-gu District Office in Seoul (District Mayor Kim Gil-seong) and the street vendors of Myeongdong have rolled up their sleeves to create a pleasant Myeongdong street environment.
At 10 a.m. on the 15th, about 160 people, including street vendor operators, gathered in Myeongdong to carry out a large-scale water cleaning operation. They collected waste and thoroughly wiped away dirt and dust from the ground so that tourists could stroll through a clean Myeongdong.
Three 5-ton water sprinklers supported by the district and one street cleaning vehicle sprayed water into every corner of Myeongdong-gil, washing the area. The sections cleaned that day stretched a total of 600 meters, from Myeongdong Station to the Art Theater, and from Myeongdong Cathedral to Noon Square.
Lee Gang-su, General Secretary of the Myeongdong Welfare Association, stated, “Going forward, street vendor operators will regularly water-clean the Myeongdong pavement to create an environment where tourists can walk comfortably.”
