"Drugs, Don't Even Be Curious!"...Youth Drug Prevention Campaign

Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) conducted a drug misuse and abuse prevention campaign on the 16th targeting middle and high school students and local residents in the area, in response to the recent drug incident in the Gangnam academy district and the increasing accessibility and exposure of youth to drugs through social networking services (SNS).

To raise awareness among youth about drug-related crimes, the district, together with related organizations such as Dongdaemun Police Station, Dongbu Office of Education, and the Dongdaemun branch of the Youth Development Association, distributed leaflets and promotional items near the intersection at Hwikyung Girls' Middle and High School (43-167 Hwikyung-dong), which is a commuting route for students of Hwibong Technical High School, Hwikyung Girls' Middle and High School, and Jeondong Middle School, to inform about the harms of drug misuse and abuse.

According to data from the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, over the recent six years (2017?2022), while the total number of drug offenders increased by 23.2%, drug offenders under the age of 19 surged by 304.2%, highlighting the urgent need for education on the addictive and dependency effects and the serious harms of drugs among youth.

Dongdaemun-gu, together with Dongdaemun Police Station, Dongbu Office of Education, and the Dongdaemun Branch of the Youth Development Association, is conducting a campaign to raise awareness among local youth and residents about the harms of drug abuse.

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, who participated in the campaign, stated, “Through active cooperation with related organizations, we will establish a prevention and management system for youth drug abuse, block access to drugs that have permeated the daily lives of our youth, and create a Dongdaemun-gu free from drugs.”

The district plans to build a cooperative system to protect youth from drugs by linking with local community organizations such as Dongdaemun Police Station, Dongbu Office of Education, Dongdaemun Pharmaceutical Association, and Kyung Hee University Hospital through ▲ sharing information on illegal drug distribution ▲ supporting professional instructors for prevention education ▲ advising on educational material production ▲ promoting illegal drug prevention.
