According to the Jeju Coast Guard on the 16th, a total of 131 water leisure accidents occurred in the jurisdiction over the past three years, with 68% (90 cases) concentrated during the peak season from May to October.
By accident type, there were 94 cases of engine failure (drifting) > 16 cases of flooding > 12 cases of capsizing > 5 cases of collision > 3 cases of grounding > 1 case of fire, with simple engine failure (drifting) accidents accounting for the majority.
The Jeju Coast Guard expects an increase in visitors coming to Jeju to enjoy extreme sports such as surfing and kayaking during the summer vacation season.
From this month until the end of October, the Coast Guard plans to secure the safety of water leisure participants by conducting on-site inspections of water leisure businesses in the province, managing prohibited areas for water leisure activities, focusing on safety management of non-powered leisure equipment (kayaks, surfing, etc.), guiding and inspecting water leisure businesses, providing safety education for workers, and conducting special crackdowns on water leisure violations.
In addition, special crackdowns (unlicensed operation, failure to wear safety equipment, intoxicated navigation) will be conducted targeting water leisure participants, businesses, and leisure vessels. After prior announcement and publicity of the crackdown, a comprehensive crackdown will be carried out during the summer vacation season when water leisure activities are concentrated.
A Jeju Coast Guard official said, “To prevent safety accidents during water leisure activities, we will strictly adhere to safety rules, especially conduct pre-inspections of leisure equipment before activities and comply with related laws, creating an environment where water leisure activities can be safely enjoyed and fostering a sound marine leisure culture together with the public.”
