A man in his 50s who secretly entered a welfare facility for the disabled and sexually assaulted female disabled individuals was sentenced to a heavy prison term.
On the 12th, the Criminal Division 12 of Daegu District Court (Presiding Judge Eo Jaewon) sentenced A (53), an employee of a certain welfare facility for the disabled, to 8 years in prison for violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes, among other charges.
He was also ordered to complete an 80-hour sexual violence treatment program, face a 10-year employment restriction at child-related institutions, and undergo 5 years of probation.
A was prosecuted on charges of secretly entering the women's dormitory within a welfare facility for the disabled in Yeongcheon, Gyeongbuk, where he worked, after bedtime last September, and sexually assaulting or forcibly molesting two female disabled individuals with intellectual disabilities level 2. After the crime was discovered, he cut off contact and went into hiding, but was caught by the police about five months later.
The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "As a worker at a facility for the disabled, he committed crimes against women with severe intellectual disabilities, which is a serious offense. If the crime had not been discovered by a witness, it is highly likely that it would not have been known to the outside world. He has made no efforts to restore the victims, and the victims are seeking severe punishment."
