Gyeonggi Province will start providing 'Opportunity Income' to artists and people with disabilities as early as the end of July.
Opportunity Income is a program that compensates those who create value in society but are not rewarded by providing income support for a certain period. It is a key project of Governor Kim Dong-yeon.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Council announced the legislative notice for the 'Opportunity Income Support Ordinance for People with Disabilities' following last month's 'Opportunity Income Payment Ordinance for Artists.'
The Provincial Council will review the two ordinances at the regular session next month.
Gyeonggi Province plans to start paying Opportunity Income immediately after the ordinances are passed and promulgated at the end of July.
However, for the artists' Opportunity Income, which is supported in matching with cities and counties, support will begin in cities and counties such as Paju City where the ordinance has been enacted. Meanwhile, the Opportunity Income for people with disabilities, which is fully funded by the provincial government, can be paid uniformly.
The artists' Opportunity Income will provide 1.5 million KRW annually to eligible individuals who reside in Gyeonggi Province, have valid proof of artistic activity, and whose personal income is below 120% of the median income. Gyeonggi Province estimates that about 11,000 people will be eligible.
The Opportunity Income for people with disabilities will provide 50,000 KRW per month for six months, totaling 300,000 KRW, to those classified as 'severely disabled' with personal income below 120% of the median income (estimated 2,000 people).
