Choi Yoon-beom, Chairman of Korea Zinc, "Stepping Up as a Global-Level ESG Company"

Choi Yoon-beom, Chairman of Korea Zinc, announced his commitment to transforming the company into a global-level ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) enterprise.

At the 2nd meeting of the Sustainability Management Committee held on the 11th at Korea Zinc's Seoul headquarters, Chairman Choi stated, "We must further strengthen the company-wide management system regarding carbon neutrality, safety, and the environment to ensure the success of the new growth engine, the Troika Drive. Based on the ESG management achievements accumulated over the past year, the Sustainability Management Committee must continue to play a crucial role in advancing Korea Zinc into a global-level ESG company."

Reflecting Chairman Choi's determination, the committee was launched in December last year to identify key ESG-related issues within the company, establish the direction for sustainable management, and deliberate and decide on ESG management goals and current issues.

During the meeting, the committee evaluated ESG activities from the first quarter and discussed major plans for the second quarter. Key agenda items included ▲progress on Green Metal ▲publication of the 2022 Sustainability Management Report and materiality assessment results ▲assessment of ESG status of subsidiaries and affiliates ▲plans for responding to domestic and international ESG evaluations.

The committee took time to discuss the results of the materiality assessment on key ESG issues and decided to strategically approach the important aspects that must be considered in pursuing sustainable management through this assessment. The results of the materiality assessment will be included in the Sustainability Management Report scheduled for publication in June.

Additionally, to expand the scope of sustainable management to subsidiaries and affiliates, the committee reviewed the ESG status of subsidiaries, identified improvement tasks, and decided to gradually establish ESG management at a level comparable to that of the parent company.

Last year, Korea Zinc was newly included in the DJSI Korea index, conducted by S&P Global, a global financial information provider, marking the first time in the metal mining industry. On the 10th, Korea Zinc demonstrated its ESG management capabilities by winning the Special Award for Carbon Management in the Climate Change category at the '2022 CDP Korea Awards' hosted by the CDP Korea Committee.

A Korea Zinc official said, "We will continue to enhance our strengths in ESG evaluations and improve areas of weakness to upgrade our ESG rating to the next level. In line with global standards and government ESG initiatives, we will not only respond efficiently to government policies but also strengthen external cooperation with international organizations such as Morgan Stanley and S&P."
