Creating 27 Holes to Revitalize the Declining Sandong District
Projects for Stay-Type Tourism and Regional Economic Development
On the 11th, Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do held a press conference in the county office situation room regarding the Gurye Sandong Hot Spring C·C Development Project.
County Governor Kim Soon-ho explained at the press conference that the Gurye Sandong Hot Spring C·C Development Project is an essential initiative aimed at revitalizing the stagnant Sandong Hot Spring area, promoting stay-type tourism, and fostering regional economic development.
Governor Kim emphasized, "The golf course established in Sandong-myeon, which boasts natural resources such as Sansuyu and hot springs, can create greater synergy when linked with nearby tourist attractions like Jirisan Garden and Gurye Arboretum. Golf, which has become a popular sport enjoyed by approximately 11.76 million people, has a significant economic and social impact on the region."
He also stated, "The Jirisan Hot Spring Tourist Area was designated as a tourist special zone in 1997 and has been anticipated as a representative tourist destination of the region. However, the golf course development planned in 2005 faced conflicts between supporters and opponents, and private investment related to the golf course has not been made for a long time."
Furthermore, he said, "In the urgent situation where the number of closed stores is increasing day by day, private investment to revive the hot spring tourist area is urgently needed," adding, "Many residents are urging the prompt implementation of the golf course development project."
Regarding concerns from environmental groups and some residents that the golf course would destroy nature and pollute groundwater, he said, "We will carefully listen to these valuable opinions concerned about regional development and continuously supplement any shortcomings," and added, "I ask all residents to unite their efforts so that we can overcome the crisis of local extinction and achieve a greater leap forward as a stay-type tourism city."
