Gyeonggi Province is launching a support project for neutering outdoor-raised dogs.
On the 12th, Gyeonggi Province announced that it will implement the "Outdoor-Raised Dog Neutering Surgery Support" project for residents who wish to neuter dogs raised outdoors, such as in yards, in cooperation with 31 cities and counties within the province.
This project supports neutering surgeries for yard dogs aged 5 months or older raised outdoors in rural areas.
The project aims to prevent indiscriminate increases in pet dog populations and minimize the occurrence of abandoned dogs, thereby fostering a proper animal protection culture.
This year, Gyeonggi Province will support neutering surgery costs up to 400,000 KRW for female dogs, targeting a total of 1,990 dogs. The self-pay portion is 10% of the surgery cost, up to 40,000 KRW. Even including the self-pay, the surgery cost is cheaper than general neutering surgery fees.
Those wishing to neuter their dogs must visit the relevant city or county office department or administrative welfare center to submit an application form. If selected as a beneficiary, they can proceed with surgery after consultation and examination with a veterinarian at a designated animal hospital.
To receive neutering surgery support, animal registration (implantable microchip) must be completed.
Gyeonggi Province initiated a pilot project for yard dog neutering surgery support in 2020 in nine cities and counties including Yongin City, and converted it into a national government-funded project starting last year.
Park Kyung-ae, Director of the Animal Welfare Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Most abandoned dogs occurring in rural areas result from neglect of outdoor-raised dogs that have not been neutered," adding, "We will actively develop customized policies considering regional characteristics to minimize the occurrence of abandoned dogs in rural areas."
