Construction Begins This Month on the Conversion of Old Gyeongin Expressway Incheon Starting Point to Seo-Incheon IC into General Road... Completion in 2027

Incheon City announced on the 11th that the first section of the project to convert the old Gyeongin Expressway section from Incheon starting point to Seo-Incheon IC, a 10.45km stretch (Incheon-daero), into a general road will begin construction at the end of this month.

The 1-1 section to be constructed this time covers the 1.8km stretch from Incheon starting point to Dokbae-ro (Inha-ro), and the construction company was selected in January last year.

However, the demolition of the bypass overpass around Incheon Station overlapped with the construction period, raising concerns about severe traffic congestion in the surrounding area, so the start of construction was delayed to prepare countermeasures.

To minimize inconvenience to citizens, the city increased the number of lanes open to traffic during construction from the originally planned 2 lanes (one lane each way) to 4 lanes and detailed the traffic management plan.

The construction period for section 1-1 is 40 months, with completion scheduled for the second half of 2026.

The Incheon-daero general road conversion project involves demolishing the retaining walls and soundproof walls of the old Gyeongin Expressway section that has divided downtown Incheon for the past 50 years, and creating parks, green spaces, and leisure areas in the center of the road.

Starting with the commencement of section 1-1, the city plans to progressively carry out construction of section 1-2 from Dokbae-ro to Juan Industrial Complex (3 km) and section 2 from Juan Industrial Complex to Seo-Incheon IC (5.65 km), aiming to complete the entire section by 2027.
