SK Chemicals is set to intensify its pursuit of the global cosmetics container market.

The China Beauty Expo is the largest beauty fair in Asia. It is an event where global cosmetics brands, manufacturers, distributors, and related organizations showcase the latest trends, technologies, and products. Recently, the hot topic in the cosmetics industry is the Chinese market, which leads global cosmetics consumption. In 2021, the Chinese cosmetics market was valued at 572.6 billion yuan (approximately 109 trillion KRW), and the per capita cosmetics purchase amount was only one-quarter of that in the United States, making it a market with high growth potential. SK Chemicals, the number one market share holder in the Chinese copolyester market, has prepared an exhibition space where visitors can experience the 'plastic circular economy' along with 'sustainable plastic materials' that contain recycled raw materials or can be recycled into PET after use, in line with the recycling trend in the cosmetics packaging market at this exhibition.

SK Chemicals will launch a new product, copolyester using chemically recycled raw materials (a material with excellent chemical resistance that does not deteriorate even when in contact with chemical substances). Copolyester is a material that can replace styrene-based materials such as ABS (high-performance synthetic resin) and SAN (transparent plastic material).

Plastic use regulations are being strengthened worldwide, including in the EU and the United States. Accordingly, global cosmetics brands are refraining from using styrene-based plastics. In France, the use of non-recyclable styrene-based plastics will be banned from January 1, 2025, and related laws and regulations are expected to be enacted and enforced worldwide.

Kim Eung-su, Head of the Green Materials Business Division at SK Chemicals, said, "We will do our best to target the eco-friendly packaging market in line with the demands of global cosmetics companies," adding, "Through various technological developments, we plan to grow sustainable materials into core materials for premium cosmetics containers."
