Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, attended the ‘Longevity Celebration for Nonagenarian and Centenarian Seniors’ held at 10:30 a.m. on the 9th in the large auditorium on the 2nd floor of the district office.

This event, planned to celebrate the longevity of seniors and encourage the efforts of their children who care for them, was held for the first time in 2019 and resumed this year after four years. While the 2019 event targeted centenarians and their families, this year nonagenarians were also invited to the celebration to show respect.

As of April this year, the population of seniors aged 65 and over residing in Nowon-gu is approximately 93,000, ranking third among Seoul’s autonomous districts, accounting for 18.6% of the total population. The district is implementing various projects for seniors, including jobs, health, care, and culture, and uniquely hosts a celebration wishing for the healthy longevity of elderly seniors in Seoul.

Dongdaemun-gu Establishes Social Safety Net to Prevent Solitary Deaths

Signs Business Agreement for ‘AI Anbu Dundeun Service’ to Conduct Regular Welfare Checks on Socially Isolated Households

Pilot Service to Run Until the End of This Year... Building a Detailed Social Safety Net through a Solitary Death Prevention Task Force

Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) is introducing the ‘AI Anbu Dundeun Service’ to conduct 24-hour regular welfare checks on households at risk of social isolation.

On the 8th, the district signed a business agreement with the Seoul Welfare Foundation, Korea Electric Power Corporation, SK Telecom, and Happy Connect to select 200 households at risk of solitary death within the district and pilot the ‘AI Anbu Dundeun Service’ until the end of this year.

The ‘AI Anbu Dundeun Service’ integrates and analyzes lifestyle data of socially isolated households, such as communication data, electricity usage, and care applications. If a mobile phone is not used for a certain period or electricity usage is lower than expected, AI calls to check on the resident’s welfare and, if an emergency is suspected, dispatches emergency personnel to secure the safety of the individual.

Prior to this, the district formed a ‘Solitary Death Prevention Task Force’ in February to address the increasing issues of solitary deaths and social isolation due to low birth rates and aging population. Through six meetings, diverse opinions were gathered to build a seamless and detailed social safety net.

First, the district formed the ‘Dongdaemun Neighborhood Do Dream Activity Group’ consisting of 351 residents, including welfare community members and neighborhood leaders who are familiar with local conditions. Since April, they have been actively identifying welfare blind spots and at-risk households to ensure prompt welfare services.

In the second half of the year, the district plans to expand the ‘Our Neighborhood Care Group,’ provide health drinks, and offer face-to-face welfare checks for households at risk of solitary death to strengthen emotional support.

Additionally, the district plans to further enhance the social safety net by distributing companion plant cultivation kits for emotional stability, installing safety handrails, and providing anti-slip mats to prevent fall accidents.

At the agreement ceremony on the 8th, Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “As South Korea enters a low birth rate and aging society, social issues such as solitary deaths are increasing. While there is no single solution to the problem of solitary deaths, it is clear that answers must be found on the ground. We will thoroughly examine every corner of the district to create a Dongdaemun-gu where no resident is left isolated and everyone can be happy.”
