The First Metropolitan Railway Outside the Capital Region: Yangsan Ungsang Within 10 Minutes, Ulsan Sinbok Within 30 Minutes

Busan City announced on the morning of the 9th that the "Busan?Yangsan?Ulsan Metropolitan Railroad" has been finally selected as a project subject to the preliminary feasibility study (hereinafter referred to as the preliminary feasibility study) at the Ministry of Strategy and Finance's Fiscal Project Evaluation Committee.
This is a remarkable achievement accomplished five years after the project planning stage of the "Busan?Yangsan?Ulsan Metropolitan Railroad."
In particular, since the "Busan?Yangsan?Ulsan Metropolitan Railroad" was included in the "4th National Railroad Network Construction Plan" in July 2021, this success was achieved through active cooperation with related local governments and regional political circles, including National Assembly member Jeong Dong-man of the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee, based on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's preliminary feasibility study results.
The "Busan?Yangsan?Ulsan Metropolitan Railroad" is a 48.8 km long railway extending from Nopo in Busan through Wolpyeong and Ungsang in Yangsan to the Ulsan KTX station. The total project cost is 3.0424 trillion KRW, with the goal of opening in 2030.
Once this metropolitan railroad opens, travel times will be reduced to about 10 minutes from Nopo, Busan to Ungsang, Yangsan; about 30 minutes to Sinbok Rotary, Ulsan; and about 50 minutes to Ulsan KTX station. Along with the Donghae Line and the soon-to-be-opened Bujeon-Masan Line, it is expected to serve as infrastructure to establish a one-hour living zone across Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam.
In particular, the city explained that the "Busan?Yangsan?Ulsan Metropolitan Railroad" is the first metropolitan railroad outside the Seoul metropolitan area, and its selection as a preliminary feasibility study project signifies securing momentum to build a new growth axis in the southern region to counterbalance the Seoul-centric system.
Mayor Park Hyung-jun said, "The 'Busan?Yangsan?Ulsan Metropolitan Railroad,' the first metropolitan railroad outside the Seoul metropolitan area to overcome the Seoul-centric system, has now been put on the right track with this project selection." He added, "We will continue to closely consult and respond with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and related local governments such as Gyeongnam and Ulsan to smoothly pass the remaining administrative procedures, including the upcoming preliminary feasibility study." He also said, "With this project selection, the urban railroad 'Jeonggwan Line,' a pending issue in Gijang County, will gain more momentum."
