NHN Cloud announced on the 8th that it has opened the ‘NHN Cloud Gwangju Research & Development (R&D) Center’ in Gwangju Metropolitan City. The center will focus on AI-based research in connection with the Gwangju National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data Center, which is being established this year.
The opening ceremony was attended by key figures including Kang Gi-jung, Mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, and Kim Dong-hoon, CEO of NHN Cloud.
As part of its strategy to ‘create a regional hub cloud ecosystem,’ NHN Cloud established the Gwangju R&D Center. It is planned to be used as a focal point for AI collaboration between Gwangju Metropolitan City and NHN.

▲ The center will focus on AI application technologies such as AI, gaming, fintech development tasks within NHN group companies, ▲ replacing foreign graphic processing units (GPUs) with domestically produced AI semiconductors to enter the global cloud market, and ▲ developing medical imaging analysis and diagnostic support services using AI and machine learning technologies.
The Gwangju R&D Center spans 820㎡ and has started operations with about 60 employees. In addition to personnel dispatched from the headquarters, specialized personnel selected from local talents through the NHN Academy Gwangju Campus, who have been trained to be deployed in the field, also work together. The workforce is planned to expand to 180 employees in the future.
Kim Yong-seung, Director of the AI Policy Bureau of Gwangju Metropolitan City, stated, “We plan to strengthen collaboration in operating the R&D Center to increase the utilization rate of the AI Data Center and create synergistic effects by integrating with local infrastructure together with NHN Cloud.”
CEO Kim said, “NHN Cloud is implementing a strategy to create a cloud ecosystem by leveraging the characteristics of regional hubs such as Gwangju, Gimhae, and Suncheon. In the case of Gwangju, the Gwangju R&D Center was opened to foster research and development and human resource training for cultivating an AI-specialized ecosystem ahead of the establishment of the AI Data Center.”
NHN Cloud is participating in the ‘AI Industry Convergence Complex Development Project’ promoted by Gwangju Metropolitan City and is establishing the Gwangju National AI Data Center, aiming for completion in the second half of this year. Last September, NHN Academy Gwangju Campus was opened, and this month the Gwangju R&D Center was inaugurated, demonstrating efforts to nurture the Gwangju AI ecosystem and expand the local ICT ecosystem.
