Cultivating Specialized Talent in the Field of Security
LG Uplus is establishing a new contract-based department called the 'Department of Information Security' in collaboration with Soongsil University to cultivate specialized professionals in the field of cyber security.
On the 9th, LG Uplus and Soongsil University announced that they held a signing ceremony for the establishment and operation of the Department of Information Security at Soongsil University's Baird Hall in Seoul, attended by LG Uplus CEO Hwang Hyun-sik and Soongsil University President Jang Beom-sik. This is the first time LG Uplus has partnered with a university to create a contract-based department.

LG Uplus has been promoting the establishment of the Department of Information Security as part of the 'Cyber Safety Innovation Plan' announced on February 16 to strengthen personal information protection and information security. Through this agreement, LG Uplus plans to contribute to the national-level cultivation of security professionals and continuously enhance its own information security capabilities by hiring the trained experts.
Soongsil University will establish the Department of Information Security within its College of IT and plans to select 20 freshmen annually starting from the 2024 academic year, when current high school seniors enter university, to nurture professionals in the cyber security field. To this end, Soongsil University completed the department establishment notification to the Ministry of Education last month. The curriculum design and class operations of the Department of Information Security will be managed by the existing faculty of the Department of Software.
Students will grow into cyber security professionals through systematic theoretical and practical education covering the entire cyber security domain, including the most critical code management skills in information security practice, mobile security, data security, and artificial intelligence (AI) security.
The Department of Information Security will operate as a four-year undergraduate program, and all admitted students will receive full tuition and a certain amount of living expenses from LG Uplus for two years. After completing the second year, students will be selected as industry-academia scholarship students through a separate screening process. Selected students will receive additional full tuition, living expenses, mobile communication fees, and an opportunity to join LG Uplus upon graduation.
LG Uplus CEO Hwang Hyun-sik said, "Considering the reality that there are not many domestic universities cultivating security professionals, we expect this agreement with Soongsil University, which has expertise in security and computer engineering, to greatly contribute to nurturing security experts in Korea. LG Uplus will share its telecommunications business experience with Soongsil University to support talent development and establish a cyber security system that earns customer trust by recruiting the trained professionals."
LG Uplus is strengthening its cyber security capabilities, including personal information protection and defense against cyber attacks. In addition to cultivating security professionals, the company has organized its information security team directly under the CEO and is recruiting security experts in various fields. Furthermore, LG Uplus plans to continue activities such as pre-inspection of vulnerabilities and simulated hacking with external security experts, applying advanced security technologies, researching and investing in future security technologies, and publishing cyber security innovation activity reports.
