"The CEO Got Cancer, Now the Taste Has Cancer Too"... Controversy Over Malicious Reviews on Delivery Apps

Netizens Outraged Over Reviews Shared on Online Community
"Expressing Complaints Through Others' Pain Is Petty and Pitiful"

"Since the owner was diagnosed with cancer, the taste here has also gone bad. I don't know if he is still alive, but the taste has died recently."

Recently, a malicious review below common sense posted on a delivery app has been shared on online communities, drawing criticism from netizens. According to the post, Mr. A ordered a menu including flounder sashimi, large flatfish, rockfish, and salmon from a sashimi restaurant in Seocho-gu and left a review after delivery.

Mr. A started by saying, "When I first ordered a few years ago, it was so delicious and impressive, but not only today, recently the taste has been very bad." He continued, "Especially the flatfish is always dry. Why is that? Is it because I only order at dawn? Is the usual operation system that the daytime staff slices the sashimi and the nighttime staff packs it?" he harshly criticized.

Mr. A did not stop there and said, "The owner said he was diagnosed with cancer, I don't know the exact details, but since then the taste here has also gotten cancer. I don't know if he is alive, but the taste has died recently," and "Whether the taste got bad because he couldn't take care of the store due to cancer, or whether he got cancer because of the bad taste and filthy management, only God knows," he poured out abusive words.

Finally, Mr. A added, "The rating is perfect even though the taste is this bad, so manipulation is suspected. If it was actually manipulated, you got cancer because of that and either died or are dying because of that," and "Live the rest of your life kindly, or if you are dead, be reborn and be punished."

The writer who shared Mr. A's review wrote, "It was a store I often ordered from, but after reading the review, I feel bad," and asked, "Is it possible to report this instead?" Netizens who saw the post also expressed anger, saying, "It's vicious," and "Using someone else's pain to express your own dissatisfaction is despicable and pathetic."

Meanwhile, delivery app platform companies have recently taken steps to establish response standards for such problematic malicious reviews.

On the 6th, Han Ki-jung, chairman of the Fair Trade Commission, held a 'Delivery Platform Self-Regulation Plan Presentation' at the Korea Federation of SMEs in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, and announced such measures. The Fair Trade Commission plans to prepare specific countermeasures such as usage restriction criteria for consumers who write malicious reviews and procedures for merchants to request suspension of review postings.
