"Become a Joseon Dynasty doctor like the heavenly gifted Heojun and examine the sick"
Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Kim Tae-woo) operates the ‘2023 Treasure Experience at Heojun Museum’ utilizing the nationally designated treasures 'Sinchan Byeok Onbang' and 'Emergency Simple Remedies Volume 6' held at the Heojun Museum, sharing the wisdom of ancestors and excellent cultural heritage.
The ‘Treasure Experience at Heojun Museum’ is a traditional medical experience program featuring the story of Gu-am Heojun, designed as a Cultural Heritage Administration public project to inform both domestic and foreign participants about medical expertise and expand opportunities to enjoy traditional culture.
The project consists of three detailed programs: ▲I am a Joseon Doctor ▲Meeting the Treasures of Heojun Museum ▲Heojun Museum Foreigners’ Traditional Experience.
‘I am a Joseon Doctor’ is a cultural experience program where participants become students of Hyeminseo (惠民署), aspiring to be ’uiwon‘ (medical officers), a specialized profession in the Joseon Dynasty. Participants wear doctor’s attire and learn about Sasang constitutional medicine, packaging and preparation methods of medicinal herbs, classification and efficacy of various herbs. They also challenge the medical examination (Uigwa), one of the civil service exams (japgwa), which was the gateway to becoming a medical officer, experiencing the professional medical occupation. This program will be held four times in July and August.
‘Meeting the Treasures of Heojun Museum’ is a cultural heritage lecture program where participants learn about the nationally designated treasures 'Sinchan Byeok Onbang' and 'Emergency Simple Remedies Volume 6', which record commoners’ perceptions of diseases and treatments, through explanations by experts. It is held twice, once in the first half of the year (April) and once in the second half (October).
The Heojun Museum Foreigners’ Traditional Experience program allows foreigners to learn about and experience Korean traditional medicine, which is usually difficult for them to access. Participants can listen to cultural heritage explanations at Heojun Museum and learn about medicinal herbs and various medical techniques suited to the local characteristics.
Additionally, a traditional Korean medicine doctor is invited to provide pulse diagnosis and acupuncture experience. This program will be held twice in October and November.
For detailed information such as application periods for each program, please visit the Korea Heritage Center website, the executing organization of the project. Applications can be made via Google Form.
