"‘Lee Nak-yeon Doesn’t Appear, Profits Don’t Go to Moon Jae-in’"
Some supporters of former President Moon Jae-in are showing a boycott movement against the documentary film ‘Moon Jae-in Imnida,’ which depicts the daily life of the former president after his retirement.
‘Moon Jae-in Imnida’ is a work by director Lee Chang-jae, who previously directed ‘Roh Moo-hyun Imnida.’ The film, which features Moon’s rural life after retirement and interviews with about 50 people around him, is set to be released on the 10th.
The production team explained that the film focuses more on Moon’s personal life rather than political topics.
However, the pro-Moon faction, known as ‘Munpa,’ has created a poster saying “Munpa will not watch” and is sharing it in group chat rooms. They cited three reasons for the boycott: ▲the film was made by supporters of Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea ▲former Democratic Party leader Lee Nak-yeon does not appear in the film ▲the film does not generate profits for former President Moon Jae-in.
When Moon’s daughter, Dahye, posted a promotional tweet about the documentary, some replied with concerns. Comments such as “There was controversy about the production company; it shouldn’t be that someone unfairly profits by using the former president” were met with Dahye’s response, seemingly aware of the controversy: “I would appreciate it if you watch the film and then judge. My father sincerely hopes the film does well.”
Before the documentary’s release, on the 18th, former President Moon appeared in a pre-released interview from the documentary on the YouTube show ‘Kim Eo-jun’s Das Bweida,’ saying, “The achievements over five years are not just my achievements but those that the people and South Korea achieved together,” and “Seeing it collapse so quickly and revert to the past makes me feel somewhat empty.” This statement sparked attention. However, the completed documentary did not include this remark. The host, Kim Eo-jun, also clarified that the pre-released footage was “an unedited part.”
Director Lee said, “I did not want to focus on politician Moon Jae-in but rather on the human Moon Jae-in, who has gone through the journeys of lawyer, politician, and president,” adding that politically controversial parts were minimized as much as possible.
