[Editor's Note] The subway is not only a transportation method that anyone can easily access and travel safely with, but also an important point for daily walking. We introduce walkable places around subway stations.
Today's course is Daejeon Jungangno Station. Located in a bustling area, Jungangno Station is home to the oldest shopping district, Euneungjeongi Street, as well as the NC Department Store Jungangno Branch, and the Catholic Diocese of Daejeon’s Daehung-dong Cathedral, which is mainly visited by Catholic believers. There is also the main branch of Seongsimdang.
Along with Eunhaeng-dong and Daehung-dong, Seonhwa-dong represents the original downtown of Daejeon. Through urban regeneration projects, deteriorated roads, parks, and street trees have been refurbished, transforming the area into a new tourist attraction in Daejeon. Behind the former Chungnam Provincial Office lies the
At the outdoor performance hall in Uridul Park, various performances and events are regularly held. It is the most active place for busking performances in Daejeon. The area around Uridul Park also has many restaurants and pubs. Nearby attractions include Daejeon Jungang Market, which sells food and daily necessities, the Catholic Daehung-dong Church with a history of 100 years, and the Daejeon Modern History Exhibition Hall, formerly the Chungnam Provincial Office.
Seongsimdang, which started in 1956 as a small steamed bun shop in front of Daejeon Station, is an iconic company of Daejeon. It is also a pilgrimage site for bakery lovers. The main branch is a symbol of Seongsimdang. It offers bakery items such as fried soboro bread and various sister menus, handmade Seongsimdang sandwiches that must be eaten the same day, fried rice balls, a whole wheat bread corner represented by ‘Seongsim Mill’, myungnan baguette, and Bomunsan Echo, among others. It is crowded from opening to closing time. Bread purchased on the first floor of Seongsimdang can be eaten for free at the terrace kitchen on the second floor.
The Euneungjeongi Cultural Street near Seongsimdang originated from a village with a ginkgo tree pavilion and formed around Jungangno in front of Daejeon Station. It is Daejeon’s Myeongdong, with department stores, underground shopping malls, galleries, and more concentrated nearby, making it a shopping and cultural hub popular with young people. The Sky Road, opened in 2013, is a massive LED video arcade structure measuring 214 meters in length, 13.3 meters in width, and 20 meters in height. Every night, a fantastic video show is presented. The large screen creates another sky path, as its name suggests.
